Drug Information - Prilosec

Brand Name: Prilosec



  Prilosec is used to treat various stomach or esophagus problems related to excess stomach acid (e.g., GERD, certain types of ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, H pylori).
   

 

Before using this medication tell your doctor your medical history especially of liver or kidney disease or of any drug allergies. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It s not known if this drug is excreted into breast milk. Because of the potential for adverse effects for the infant, breast-feeding is not recommended while taking this drug. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor before breast-feeding. The elderly may be especially sensitive to this drug.

   

  This medication works best if taken before eating. Antacids may be taken with this medication. The capsules are sustained-released and must be swallowed whole. Do not crush or chew them or the long action may be destroyed and the chance of side effects increased.
   

 

This medication may cause diarrhea, constipation, stomach ache, nausea, gas, loss of appetite, headache, or dizziness the first few days as your body adjusts to it. If these effects persist or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Unlikely but tell your doctor if you develop back or joint pain, nervousness, sleep disturbances, cough, chest pain, unusual thirst, change in amount of urine or vision changes. This medication may rarely cause loss of hair, ringing in the ears, swelling of the stomach or fatigue. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

  Before taking Prilosec, tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medications you are taking especially diazepam (Valium), warfarin (Coumadin), phenytoin (Dilantin), ketoconazole, ampicillin, and iron. Do not start or stop any medication without doctor or pharmacist approval. This drug may cause an allergic reaction in patients with a history of sensitivity to the following: Omeprazole/Lansoprazole.

  If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children. IF USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
